Clay

The kiln room has been running full course!  Check out the what's going on in the art room right now.

Grade 3
Ceramic Hearts

Techniques used in project:
  • Clay Slab -  a basic hand building method made by rolled-out sheets of clay.  This can be done with a rolling pin or slab rollers, specialized pottery equipment.
  • Stamping – Using objects to make impressions in the clay.
  • Scratch & Slip – making scratches in the surface of the clay to stick it together like glue.  Slip is liquid or watered down clay that can be added to act as glue.

Grade 5
Clay Bowls

 Techniques used in project:
  • Mold – shaping clay by a frame or model around or on.  Plaster molds are typically used, but you can also use everyday found objects that you have at home like a bowl.  The plaster helps absorb the moisture.
We used a common disposable plastic or styrofoam bowl as a mold.  An every day item you can find in most stores or homes. Plastic saran wrap was used to prevent the clay from sticking to the mold.  The inside of the bowl was carefully pressed or smoothed to keep the clay bonded together.

Matisse

Grade 2
The second graders theme for the Spring Fling, art auction is Collage.

Ms. D'Amore's class is focusing on the artist Henri Matisse.  Our class masterpiece is inspired from his work called The Sea.

The Sea, 1946

Here's a sneak peak of some of the pieces we started in art class.  We don't want to give away what the final work will look like, but can you guess what sea creatures might be included in the final work?
